Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy

Osteopathic - Family Practice Center PC - PA Osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) is performed by osteopathic physicians, or doctors of osteopathic medicine (DOs), at Family Practice Center, PC, located across Central Pennsylvania.

Our osteopaths are also family physicians, trained to use OMT to treat and prevent certain types of illness or injuries. Many of our osteopathic doctors incorporate OMT into treatment plans for athletes, injured workers, and people with chronic illnesses, especially those involving back pain.

What is OMT Used For?

If you have suffered an injury or are experiencing pain, the osteopathic doctor may use OMT to examine your back and other parts of your body such as joints, tendons, and muscles. OMT can be particularly helpful in treating injuries and low back pain. For some patients, OMT can also help relieve discomfort and/or musculoskeletal abnormalities associated with a number of disorders, including asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, menstrual pain, sinus disorders, and migraines.

Learn more about OMT:

What Is the Difference Between OMT and Other Forms of Manipulation?

OMT utilizes passive thrusting techniques, but it also includes a variety of non-thrusting methods designed to affect muscles and soft tissues. OMT also optimizes blood circulation in order to maintain and restore health – while other forms of manipulation tend to focus more on spinal misalignments that are interfering with nerve transmission.

A DO’s decision to use OMT is made on a visit-by-visit basis, depending on the condition of the patient at the time of each visit. This leads to a significantly lower number of visits than other health care providers who use manipulation.

How Is OMT Performed?

Your structural exam will begin with an assessment of your posture, spine, and balance. The doctor will use his or her fingers to palpate your back and extremities, and check your joints for restriction and/or pain during movement. The osteopathic physician will also check your muscles, tendons, and ligaments for signs of tenderness.

Using a variety of specialized OMT techniques, the doctor will apply specific corrective forces to your body’s affected areas to treat structural abnormalities and relieve joint restriction. Based upon the complexity or severity of your problem, you may require more than one treatment.

To find out whether you are a candidate for OMT, call one of our Central PA offices for an appointment. Osteopaths at our Family Practice Centers have flexible schedules to fit your needs, including early morning and evening appointments at some locations. Find a location or find a physician now.
